Biodiversity is a very important factor to the health of your garden and so by adding flowering plants to your garden you are encouraging a slew of friendly pollinators and other insects into your garden to help balance out the delicate system of plants, soil life, and other biology that exists there alongside you.

All of our plants are grown in OMRI certified Organic materials (potting mix, fertilizer, seeds, etc.) and include Organic granular fertilizer, living locally-made compost, and have been cared for with healthy microorganisms from compost tea and microbial inoculants. This year we expanded our “cut flower” offerings based on flower varieties we are growing at our farm, and we are happy to include this antique toned peach and pink swirled marigold to the mix. We are intoxicated by the sublte mix of hues in this standard style marigold, which acts almost “hyper color” in the garden. Deadheading the plant means to cut off all of the blooms to encourage fresh new shoots and blooms. The calendula is an annual flower native to the northern Mediterranean countries. It was named after a M. Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th-century French magistrate who was a patron of botany. The common name may refer to the resemblance of the inflorescence to the brightly patterned blankets made by Native Americans, or to the ability of wild taxa to blanket the ground with colonies. Gaillardia is native to all parts of Florida and are very drought and heat tolerant, making them a great option for adding flowering plants to your annuals garden or general landscaping. Gaillardia plants stay low, under 1 foot tall fully grown, and flower constantly, and can be used for cut flower arrangements too. Pentas develop sparkling star- shaped flowers all summer and winter long in bold hues of red, white, lavender, purple, or pink. Pentas is a sun lover that grows 18 to 36 inches tall and when you harvest the flower clusters often it will flower prolifically. In most parts of the country, pentas is considered an annual, but in very warm regions like ours, pentas is perennial . We first started to see this flower referred too as “edible” by the most famous garnish and specialty crop farm in North America called “Chefs Garden”, in Ohio. They call it “Egyptian star flower” maybe to fancy it up before selling it to the fanciest chefs in America.... and we were excited to learn that our plain old beautiful common pentas flower were technically edible. Much like it’s close relative celosia, these little button shaped blooms make great dried flowers because they keep their shape and color perfectly. We’ve found the tough papery blooms to be pretty unpalatable, but try them as sweet decorations on cakes and drinks! They are also commonly used in long lasting leis in Hawai’i and as part of flower crowns and boutonnieres around the world. This bright magenta variety is a particularly tough plant and known for it’s pest resistance and handling a wide range of weather. They grow into knee high bushy plants with slightly fuzzy, grayish leaves. Even if you don’t end up cutting them for your flower decorations, they make a cute addition to gardens as a border or companion plants. Even though you might not think you need or want cut flowers in your garden you can squeeze a few of these in-between your veggies or on the edges of your bed and you’ll be so glad you did when they start to pop with ornate colors.

You can transplant zinnia seedlings or direct seed them in your garden just make sure when direct seeding you keep the seeds moist through germination and don't overplant. The number one mistake made with direct seeding is planting way too many plants per square foot because it feels silly to pull two little seeds out of a package of hundreds and dropping them into your soil however, if you're going to overplant to make sure you get the amount of plants you want in a space, you absolutely must thin them about 10 days after germination.

Our Salmon zinnia mix is a blend of 6 different varieties in the salmom/ coral colorway, which is our favorite one. This is a State initiative where wildf lower meadows are planted in roadsides instead of grass, which we love! The plantings are predominantly coreopsis and phlox. Phlox are classic garden f lowers valued for their clusters of bright, star-shaped blooms in shades of pink , purple, red, and white. In our zone annual phlox varieties are the best f it, as they handle heat better than their perennial cousins. Plant them in fall through early spring for strong performance, giving them full sun to partial shade and well- drained soil enriched with compost. They need regular watering but dislike soggy conditions. With proper care, phlox will bloom generously, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.
