Easy to Grow

We consider plants "easy to grow" based on a number of factors. Are they ignored by many common pests in South Florida? If yes, they are easy to grow... Do they need special attention, like intricate trellising or pruning in order to make you food? If yes, then they are not easy to grow... Are they forgiving when it comes to how and when to harvest? If yes, you guessed it. Easy to grow! We also consider a plants tolerance to lower light situations a key ingredient to being "easy to grow" since so many gardeners struggle with getting the desired 8 hours of direct sun to their veggie patch.

All of our plants are grown in OMRI certified Organic materials (potting mix, fertilizer, seeds, etc.) and include Organic granular fertilizer, living locally-made compost, and have been cared for with healthy microorganisms from compost tea and microbial inoculants. While these can take a little while to start bearing fruit compared to other beans they do produce 4 beans per flower so a small patch of them can produce quite a surprising amount of food. Chop the beans in to little pieces for a more normal dining experience, or cut them down the middle into two long halves of bean and make a salad with them that resembles a noodle dish! Purple pods do loose some color when cooked but if just quickly blanched they can remain purple on the plate. yardlong beans are pole types so they need to be trellised. The main key to planting radishes in your garden is to start them from seed, properly thin them once germinated, and give them enough sun to keep them growing fast until harvest. Radishes can be eaten at any part of its life, from a 10 day old sprout (thats micro greens!) to a mature radish date (its not recommended to leave them in the ground past their maturity day because they will get woody). While thinning them is critical you can take advantage of the space by leaving too many radishes in, then harvesting half of them young, making room for the remaining plants to mature properly. Radish flavor is greatly effected by temperature and the amount of time it took to grow them. Radishes grown in the hottest time of the year or grown too slowly end up very spicy, whereas radishes grown in cooler weather and at the appropriate speed of growth end up the most palatable. We always recommend that home gardeners make note of the date that they planted radish seeds and their “days to maturity” and keep good track of their progress. If they don’t look like radishes by the maturity date don’t keep waiting, harvest what you’ve grown, eat it (remember, all parts of the radish plant are edible at all growth stages) figure out what you did wrong (improper thinning, not enough sunlight, etc.) and try again.

Direct seed radishes right into your garden and thin to about 1 inch apart 10 days after germination.

Provider Green Bush Beans
Phaseolus vulgaris

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
50 seeds per packet

days to maturity: 50 days
plant spacing: 4-8 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: mildew from overcrowding
harvest notes: harvest beans every other day for about 10 days then pull the plants
annual

Provider is the best early green bean for gardeners who desire good flavor, disease resistance, and high yield. 5½ inch long pods are ready at 50 days. It’s flavor is never better than when you pick it fresh from your garden. Another good reason to grow this graceful plant: The umbel of delicate yellow-green flowers attracts beneficial insects, from pest-eating wasps to colorful butterflies and once they’re pollinated theyll produce you dill seed, either for use in the kitchen or for planting next season. Dill in home gardens rarely has pest or disease problems, but black swallowtail butterfly larvae depend on dill as a food source. If they show up in your garden, you can concentrate the caterpillars on a few plants, and reap a double bounty - dill and butterflies! Dill is a plant that can be grown in “bunches” which means instead of planting 1 dill seed that makes 1 dill plant you plant about a dozen dill seeds together and basically treat them like they are one plant. You can either go through and harvest exactly the mature fronds that you need for the kitchen one by one, or you can grab the whole “bunch” of fronds and cut a few inches above the base. this is called “cut and come again” and 2-3 weeks later the plant will regrow and can be harvested again. For a continual source of dill throughout the season we recommend having at least 2 plants and replanting them every 6 weeks or so through spring.

For dill seeds we consider a “plant” of dill a cluster of about 12 seeds. So, when we say you plant 4 plants per square foot what we mean is, 4 clusters of dill plants. This is how all farms and nurseries grow dill, because dill tolerates being crowded in this way. You can also throw a whole bunch of dill seeds in a few square feet of garden space and they will almost form like a dill meadow that you can harvest from as you need fresh fronds.

Autumn Beauty Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus) 50 seeds per packet
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange

Days to maturity: 70 days
Plant spacing: 1-2 per square foot
Sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
Look out for: leaf miners, plants falling over
Harvest notes: harvest as cut flower with 12” stem
annual

Sunflowers add a really cheerful element to a garden and they attract many beneficial insects including bees and butterflies. This edible flower species is one of our favorites because of its long-blooming beauty for beds, borders and containers where it attracts beneficial insects such as hoverflies, bees and butterflies with its showy flowers. Leaves of the plant are edible and are used as flavorful salad greens and garnish. Also known as signet marigold or citrus lace, we grow this adorable plant through the farming season for local chefs and bartenders. Its especially popular in restaurant gardens because if you were to buy this as a crop from a specialty produce vendor you'd pay more than 33 cents per dinky little leaf! Use the edible flowers to dress up salads and desserts or cooked in egg or rice dishes. Flavor is floral with hints of citrus and spice, and slightly bitter. We like to harvest whole little branches for chefs instead of single flowers, because the stem & flowers are flavorful too and when they’re all combined with a few buds too its super cute. Deadheading the plant means to cut off all of the blooms to encourage fresh new shoots and blooms. The calendula is an annual flower native to the northern Mediterranean countries. In Thailand, the blue flowers are traditionally used to make purple rice, which you do by making your rice with a handful of the flowers and then adding a splash of citrus, usually lime to change the color to purple. This is a super fun way to add color to your diet and include kids in the kitchen. Raising the pH of the water (usually by adding lemon juice) makes the infusion go from blue to purple. Further, lemon balm is used for making perfumes, in cosmetics and as an essential oil used in aromatherapy to promote calmness and ease stress. Medicinally lemon balm is often consumed as a herbal tea used as a sleep aid or digestive tonic. We love growing lemon balm in home gardens because its an herb that is hard to buy fresh (no grocery stores ever sell it fresh!) and like many of its plant cousins (mint, basil, etc.) it doesn’t store well in the fridge, so having one plant in the garden will mean you’ll be producing more than enough of this delicious herbs for your kitchen and medicine cabinet needs. It’s flavor is never better than when you pick it fresh from your garden. Another good reason to grow this graceful plant: The umbel of delicate yellow-green flowers attracts beneficial insects, from pest-eating wasps to colorful butterflies and once they’re pollinated they'll produce you dill seed, either for use in the kitchen or for planting next season.

Scallions Aka Bunching Onions
Allium Fistulosum

days to maturity: 65 days
plant spacing: 6 plants per square foot
sunlight requirements: 6-14 hours
look out for: root rot caused by overwatering
harvest notes: harvest whole scallions by pulling plant or cut above the soil and let them regrow
annual

Fun fact: bunching onions are scallions. They are the easiest onion family plants we can grow in South Florida and luckily we can grow them most of the year without complications. You can squeeze about 6 clumps of scallions into one square foot in your garden, and you can either choose to harvest them from the roots and use the whole thing, or cut them just above the soil and let them regrow a few times during the season. The difference there is that if you cut and come again you wont get the tender white blanched bases which are more prized by chefs. If you want to take your scallion growing game to the next level, consider “mounding” soil up around the base of the plants 2 times before harvesting, to make the blanched section of the scallion longer and longer. Soil that is rich with compost holds water longer, which the scallions like, therefore amend the planting area with fresh compost before planting your scallions. Aesthetically, we love having a scallion patch in a kitchen garden because they add a very different texture, shape and growth pattern to the garden with their upright pointy shiny smooth stalks.

Shiso
Perilla Frutescens

days to maturity: 80 - 85 Days
plant spacing: 1-3 plants per square foot
sunlight requirements: 6-14 hours
look out for: it can spread throughout your garden so best to keep it from going to seed
harvest notes: harvest whole branches 6” down
perennial

Also known as Japanese basil, perilla and beefsteak, shiso has a unique aromatic fragrance and pairs well with everything from fried foods to lean sushi, and dishes with robust flavor. The flowers have a crazy unique component (calling it a flavor would be misleading) where when you eat them, they numb your mouth while also tasting like licking a battery and making you salivate a bunch. sound fun!? some people love it, others hate it. Its kind of a parlor trick kind of a plant for many people but its also called “szechuan buttons” because the numbing tingling buzzing sensation is kind of similar to the spice components in szechuan peppercorns. These specialty flowers are sold only for like 50 cents a piece! which we think is nuts because the plant is very easy to grow and makes tons of flowers day after day. Spilanthes is also used medicinally as a “toothache” plant, meaning you chew (but not swallow) the flowers to numb toothaches, but the flowers also have other medicinal qualities. Spilanthes has antibacterial and anti fungal properties making it a good purifying herb used for disinfecting wounds. You can use Spilanthes flowers and leaves in a water decoction or in an alcohol basic tincture.

Jackson Supreme Cucumber
Cucumis Sativus

days to maturity: 50 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot, trellised
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: powdery mildew & worms
harvest notes: harvest daily for tender fruit under 6” long

These blocky productive pickling cukes have white spines and broad disease resistance that keeps plants healthy over a long hot and humid season. Our most successful and productive kale variety on the farm, Lacinato Kale can be grown all season and if cared for properly can even produce healthy leaves through the summer months (although their flavor will decrease in deliciousness due to heat). As older leaves are harvested from the outside of the plant, it will continue to produce new growth from the interior, with the plant getting taller and taller, sometimes reaching shoulder height by spring and resembling a small palm tree. This explains one of its other names we forgot: palm tree kale! A few kale plants in the home garden will go a long way in the kitchen, plus since they are easy to grow they are great for beginners. If you’re growing your kale in a low sun environment it will just grow slower and get a bit “leggy” which is the term for plants that stretch too tall to reach the sun, however it will still make you a decent amount of food in a partial shade garden.

Collard Greens
Brassica Oleracea

days to maturity: 60
plant spacing:
sunlight requirements: 4-14 hours
look out for: worms
harvest notes: harvest outer leaves when large and leave small ones in center to mature
annual

Collards aka Collard Greens are a great option for greens growing in South Florida. In Italy and Greece where dandelion is used as a staple green it is blanched in boiling water, then removed then blanched again to remove excess bitterness before tossing with lots of garlic, lemon and good olive oil. The bittersweet root is typically used as a coffee substitute and in herbal tonics. Large mature leaves are more bitter than young tender ones, so harvest small and young leaves often for best flavor. We grow dandelion in clumps of plants and encourage people to harvest “cut and come again” style which just means grab all of the leaves and cut them in a big bunch one inch above the base of the plant, and they will all slowly grow back so you can do it again and again.
