A plant becomes a farm favorite when it is easy to grow, tastes delicious, and looks beautiful in the garden. Compact 24- 36” plants produce high yields of 3-4” baby fruit starting at 50 days from transplanting into the garden. We love to grow smaller varieties of eggplants because its easier to get large amounts of non-damaged fruit when its smaller and thus needs less time on the plant to mature. If you’re not sure what to do with small eggplants, try cutting them in half longways and grilling or baking them whole! You can even scoop out their insides once soft and baked, mix it for a rough babaganoush and then restuff the little shells. These beans are referred to as “yardlong noodle” because they’re long and skinny like a noodle and supposedly can grow up to a yard long, although we mostly see beans around 16-20” at harvest time. While these can take a little while to start bearing fruit compared to other beans they do produce 4 beans per flower so a small patch of them can produce quite a surprising amount of food. Chop the beans in to little pieces for a more normal dining experience, or cut them down the middle into two long halves of bean and make a salad with them that resembles a noodle dish! Purple pods do loose some color when cooked but if just quickly blanched they can remain purple on the plate. yardlong beans are pole types so they need to be trellised. The main key to planting radishes in your garden is to start them from seed, properly thin them once germinated, and give them enough sun to keep them growing fast until harvest. Radishes can be eaten at any part of its life, from a 10 day old sprout (thats micro greens!) to a mature radish date (its not recommended to leave them in the ground past their maturity day because they will get woody). While thinning them is critical you can take advantage of the space by leaving too many radishes in, then harvesting half of them young, making room for the remaining plants to mature properly. Radish flavor is greatly effected by temperature and the amount of time it took to grow them. Radishes grown in the hottest time of the year or grown too slowly end up very spicy, whereas radishes grown in cooler weather and at the appropriate speed of growth end up the most palatable. We always recommend that home gardeners make note of the date that they planted radish seeds and their “days to maturity” and keep good track of their progress. If they don’t look like radishes by the maturity date don’t keep waiting, harvest what you’ve grown, eat it (remember, all parts of the radish plant are edible at all growth stages) figure out what you did wrong (improper thinning, not enough sunlight, etc.) and try again.

Direct seed radishes right into your garden and thin to about 1 inch apart 10 days after germination.

Provider Green Bush Beans
Phaseolus vulgaris

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
50 seeds per packet

days to maturity: 50 days
plant spacing: 4-8 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: mildew from overcrowding
harvest notes: harvest beans every other day for about 10 days then pull the plants
annual

Provider is the best early green bean for gardeners who desire good flavor, disease resistance, and high yield. 5½ inch long pods are ready at 50 days. Grown as an edible herb in the Mediterranean area since Roman times, it was mentioned by various classical authors as an aphrodisiac, for this reason during the Middle Ages it was forbidden to grow rocket in monasteries. Once you cut the whole thick stalk of the plant a few inches above the ground it will sprout side-shoots that are thinner and flower quickly however they are also a delight in the kitchen.

Once when French Farms grew an absolutely beautiful crop of this for our CSA we had a customer complain that it was the smallest broccoli they had ever seen with almost no useable flower head… dont be tricked by the name broccoli, the harvest in this plant is the thick stem and edible kale-like leaves. Plants produce in a wide variety of climates, which is especially good news for gardeners in hot areas as Supersweet 100 is overwhelmingly drought- and heat-tolerant. Supersweet 100 are resistant to fusarium wilt and verticillium wilt, making them a solid choice for your red cherry varietal needs. Developed by the University of Florida especially for hot climates and known for its reliability to set fruit at high temperatures. Produces firm, meaty tomatoes. The trick is using a “slo-bolt” variety, which means it will go to flower slower and tolerate the heat more, and also harvesting it in a timely manner. Cilantro plants are only 6-8 inches tall when they’re mature enough to harvest, which we think is one of the reasons why people think they aren’t succeeding at growing cilantro when really what they aren’t succeeding at is harvesting it! Cilantro is a plant that can be grown in “bunches” which means instead of planting 1 cilantro seed that makes 1 cilantro plant you plant about a dozen cilantro seeds together and basically treat them like they are one plant.

You can either go through and harvest exactly the mature fronds that you need for the kitchen one by one, or you can grab the whole “bunch” of fronds and cut a few inches above the base. this is called “cut and come again” and 2-3 weeks later the plant will regrow and can be harvested again. For a continual source of cilantro throughout the season we recommend having at least 4 plants and replanting them every 6 weeks or so through spring. It’s flavor is never better than when you pick it fresh from your garden. Another good reason to grow this graceful plant: The umbel of delicate yellow-green flowers attracts beneficial insects, from pest-eating wasps to colorful butterflies and once they’re pollinated theyll produce you dill seed, either for use in the kitchen or for planting next season. Dill in home gardens rarely has pest or disease problems, but black swallowtail butterfly larvae depend on dill as a food source. If they don’t look like radishes by the maturity date don’t keep waiting, harvest what you’ve grown, eat it (remember, all parts of the radish plant are edible at all growth stages) figure out what you did wrong (improper thinning, not enough sunlight, etc.) and try again.

Sankaku Hand Hoe - Muriels Favorite Tool!

Muriels favorite tool is a little bit more foreboding looking but its equally versatile. The shape of this curved hand plow means that there is a pointy/ thin end, and a thick/ wide/ flat end, and there are options in-between. The pointy end is useful for getting into the soil and chopping things up, and then once the soil is loose you can use the wider part to plow soil out of the way of your hole. This might get awkward to explain with words but you can also use the tool to hold loose soil out of the way of the hole. So, youre digging a hole and then you leave the tool in the hole, pushed to one side, and it acts as a wall to keep the loose soil you’ve dug out of the way. Put the plants root ball in the hole, remove your hand tool and let the loose soil fall back into the hole. Turn the plow on its wide flat edge and you can use it to push soil around, or you can use it to “scuffle weed” aka scrape the surface of your soil to kill small new weeds.

This centuries old Korean tool is hand forged and strong while also being lightweight. In Thailand, the blue flowers are traditionally used to make purple rice, which you do by making your rice with a handful of the flowers and then adding a splash of citrus, usually lime to change the color to purple. This is a super fun way to add color to your diet and include kids in the kitchen. Raising the pH of the water (usually by adding lemon juice) makes the infusion go from blue to purple. Thyme is also used medicinally for lung & throat issues like cough & sore throat, wound healing, lowering blood pressure & digestive health.

spearmint
mentha spicata

days to maturity: 70 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 4-14 hours
look out for: crawling plant taking over your garden
harvest notes: prune new growing tips down to the base
perennial

Spearmint is one of the many mint varieties that grow well in our rainy summer season. Gardeners often grow it in pots or planters due to its invasive, spreading nature. The plant prefers partial shade, but will also flourish in full sun. Spearmint is best suited to loamy soils with abundant organic material. Spearmint leaves can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. They can also be preserved in salt, sugar, sugar syrup, alcohol, or oil. Spearmint is the mint variety used in Mojitos, gum & toothpaste and it also has multiple medicinal uses. Spearmint contains vitamins, antioxidants and is used primarily as a digestive aid that helps with nausea, indigestion & cramps. Spearmint also has anti fungal properties, improves memory and can help alleviate stress headaches. We love feeding kids fresh spearmint leaves because they tend to think that all leaves taste like salad, but spearmint tastes like gum! how fun is that!?

flat leaf parsley
petroselinum crispum

days to maturity: 70 days
plant spacing: 2 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 6-14 hours
look out for: crown and root rot associated with soggy soil
harvest notes: harvest mature leaves from the outside
annual

parsley may be the most easily identified of all the culinary kitchen garden herbs. We love flat parsley because the flavor is better and it is more tender than the curly variety. 2-3 parsley plants ought to produce enough fresh leaf so you’ll never have to buy this popular culinary herb again, although your plants will die during the summer due to heat, humidity and associated diseases. Parsley is rich in minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc and phosphorous, along with high levels of folic acid and Vitamins A, B, C and K. Medicinally, parsley has antimicrobial properties and high levels of antioxidants that help in strengthening the immune system and building up resistance against infections and diseases. We tell people to “treat your rosemary like its in Italy” because thats the type of hot climate it enjoys… dry dry dry! well draining soil and not-often watering is key to keeping your rosemary happy. Also try not to water the whole plant from above but rather just water the soil. Rosemary has been long associated with memory, youth, fertility and romance. Its culinary uses are many and its also been long used as a preservative for meat alongside thyme and oregano. Medicinally rosemary is used to support the heart, digestive system, brain & cognition, and the liver and blood cleansing organs. Its loaded with antioxidants and supports a healthy inflammatory response. Rosemary is antimicrobial and it can enliven our nervous system. “If you are feeling weak, exhausted, depressed, or lost in mental fog, seek rosemary for strength and clarity” (wildfoodsandmedicines.com) Because rosemary is a little bit slow growing we prefer to sell larger plants so you can start harvesting immediately instead of having to wait 6 months for your first harvest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0535/4461/collections/Screen_Shot_2020-09-06_at_12.09.42_AM.png?v=1599365409
