It’s not only stunning to look at, but also one of the most versatile greens you can grow, combining the earthy richness of spinach with a hint of beet-like sweetness. Here in zone 10b, Firebird Chard is a dream crop. It grows quickly, tolerates heat better than many leafy greens, and can be harvested again and again—just snip the outer leaves and let the center keep producing. Plant it in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil, and give it steady moisture for the most tender leaves. It’s happy both in garden beds and big containers, making it perfect for small spaces. In the kitchen, Firebird Chard is a true workhorse. Young leaves are mild enough to toss into salads, while mature ones hold up beautifully when sautéed, braised, or added to soups and stews. When growing chard keep an eye out for slugs and snails, its one of their favorite snacks.

Mullein
Verbascum thapsus

Days to Maturity:
Plant Spacing: 1 plant per square foot
Sun Exposure: 8-14 days
Watch Out For: invasive in other climates
Harvesting: harvest leaves as needed

You might be thinking “why are they selling invasive mullein”? Mulleins leaves and flowers are brewed into a tea and made into tinctures to support respiratory health and soothing coughs and sore throats. Mullein is also commonly used as a tobacco alternative with its use as a smoking herb dating back to Ancient Greece. If you are a lover of the classic red Everglades, why not give these a try too to add new colors and flavors to the garden. Their tiny size makes them adorable for use in salads, as garnish, and as snacks, and their sweet tase make them irresistible. These wild cherry tomatoes make large highly branched plants that are best grown in a wild and non-trellised fashion. If allowed to grow like a groundcover, left to sprawl and crawl along the ground they can make enormous plants with hundreds of fruit clusters on one plant!

Allow a few clusters of Everglades cherry tomatoes to stay on the plant and they will happily reseed themselves year after year. If you'd like to save the seeds instead just choose a few very ripe fruits, squeeze the insides out into a jar with water, allow it to ferment for a few days (this simulated the digestive system of an animal and will break down the mucilaginous coating around the seed) and then dry on a towel.

Despite its tolerance of the tropical heat Everglades cherry tomatoes can be grown anywhere where all other tomato varieties are. A tip for harvesting the tiny sweet fruits: instead of picking fruit by fruit, cut the entire cluster off the vine when all the fruit is most of the way ripe. Alternatively, break the fruit off of the vine one by one with their little green hat on (the technical term is "peduncle") since the fruits skin tends to rip when its removed hastily.

Paulista Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata) Live Plant

Days to maturity: 90 days
Plant spacing: 1 per square foot, but it will crawl
Sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
Look out for: powdery mildew & worms
Harvest notes: harvest fruit as summer squash or wait for skin to harden for winter squash
Seasons: fall, spring
Lifecycle: Annual

Paulista is a traditional Brazilian squash that’s well-suited to hot, humid climates like ours. All other varieties we sell at our sales we have some experience with. We grew a small patch at our farm and while its yield wasn't super impressive the beautiful fruit was exceptionally flavored. Purple food doesn't love intense heat so we weren't surprised that it wasn't a big producer but we still liked growing it and will do so again this year. They need full sun, fertile and well-drained soil, and steady watering—uneven moisture is the main cause of bitterness in cucumbers. With regular picking, the plants will reward you with a steady stream of fruits. The cucumbers themselves are small (about 3–4 inches long) with tender skins and a mild, refreshing flavor. They’re the perfect size for snacking straight off the vine, packing in lunches, or slicing into salads. Because they don’t need peeling and cook quickly, they’re also great tossed into stir-fries or lightly pickled for a fresh side dish. As with all cucumbers, beware the arrival of powdery mildew, which can be exacerbated by shady growing environments and too much water, and worms, which are often found in the tiny growing tips of cucumber vines.

Caraflex cabbage
Brassica oleacea

Days to Maturity: 68 days
Plant Spacing: 1 plant per square foot
Sun Exposure: 8-14 hours
Watch Out For: worms
Harvesting: harvest when head is firm

Did you know that our company started as a micro farm more than a decade ago!? One of our favorite crops to grow was “pointy cabbage”, aka Caraflex cabbage, and we noticed last year that it’s having a moment of popularity with top chefs around the country. Yes, it’s just like a normal cabbage, but it’s pointy! And fun shaped food is always fun. In order to take advantage of the fun shape we recommend quartering your cabbage and grilling or roasting it. It is easy to grow and seeds itself prolifically. The aroma of the leaf is oftentimes compared to gasoline or turpentine, because of the oils found in the leaves. Those stinky oils are what make this culinary and medicinal herb a potent digestive aid. If cooked or brewed into a hot tea some of the intense aroma is mellowed and it becomes more palatable. This super unique red variety was sourced by seed collectors in Oaxaca and we noticed that not only are the leaves beautifully shimmering with hues of red, green and everything in between, but this variety bolts and goes to seed much slower than the common green variety. While the green plants in our demonstration make small leaves and start flowering at about 6 inches tall, these variety got about 4 feet tall before flowering and the leaves are much larger.
