Make sure your orchid has something to climb and is mostly in the shade, like most other orchids it prefers living under or on a tree. Native to Central America, Vanilla is a fleshy, perennial vine, grown for its distinct pods and small seeds commonly used in flavoring. It is easy to take care of and fast growing, but to get a vanilla bean takes a few years and some work. We have also heard the vines will only flower if given the opportunity to turn back towards the ground, once some height has been established, or on secondary branch growth that stem from the main plant. Vanilla commands a high price due to the fact that every flower must be hand pollinated to produce a pod! So once your vine flowers, get out a feather duster or cotton swab and pollinate yourself. Pods can then be cured and used in a multitude of preparations. According to the mythology of the Totonac peoples of Mexico, the orchid was born when a princess, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. They were captured, beheaded, and where their blood touched the ground, the strong vine and delicate orchid grew.

Betel Leaf Vine (Piper Betle) Live Plant

Plant spacing: 1 plant every 2 feet
Sunlight requirements: partial sun, shade loving
Look out for: leaf and foot rot
Harvest notes: allow a few moths to establish before harvesting
Lifecycle: perennial

Betel leaf vine, aka ‘sausage vine,’ is a fun rare climbing vine that produces leaves that taste and smell just like sausage! It is a part of the peppercorn family, and so it has a slight pepper flavor as well as black licorice note as well. It is commonly called “root beer plant” because it kind of smells like root beer. Please be careful when planting Hoja Santa because it can be INVASIVE. The plant sends many underground shoots that will sprout up near the original plant. Since it is such a fun and amazing flavor to be able to grow in South Florida, don’t be afraid of it’s invasive quality, simply plant it in a container or a spot in your garden that is either surrounded by large trees or concrete so that it cannot spread to the rest of the yard.

Nashia/Moujean Tea
Nashia inaguensis

days to maturity:
plant spacing: 1 plant every 4-12 feet
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: mealy bugs
harvest notes: can be kept small if preferred
perennial

Moujean Tea also known as pineapple verbena or Bahama berry, Nashia or Caribbean Thyme is a large bushy shrub indigenous to the Bahamas and very well suited to our subtropical growing climate.

The plant is covered in tiny shiny leaves with a rough texture that emits a delicious aroma when crushed. Once you start to recognize the signature flower shape of a Lippia you will be able to identify other relatives yourselves as you learn more about tropical plants.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0535/4461/files/lippiaalba_700c7d4f-69ed-42d2-841f-4119a7721a0e.png?v=1686153620
aztec-sweet-herb
Aztec Sweet Herb

Aztec Sweet Herb (Lippia dulcis) Live Plant

Plant spacing: 1 plant per square foot
Sunlight requirements: 6-14 hours
Harvest notes: harvest leaves or branches as you need them
Lifecycle: perennial

Aztec Sweet Herb is a really cool plant thats in what we casually call "the lantana family", because technically Lantana isnt a family, its a genus, but there are so many cool lantanas that grow well in South Florida we like to think of them as a big happy family. Lippia Alba, dominican oregano and moujean tea, all plants we sell in this store, are all lantanas and there are 2 cool varieties native to South Florida. Aztec Sweet herb smells like a normal lantana but when you eat even just a small amount of the leaf it has a super powerful sweetness to it. We've seen cool recipes online for things like deserts with edible flowers and their leaves on top for decoration and for fruit salads with the leaf mixed in. It would also be cool in a herbaceous greens salad or as a candied leaf.

Iboza Tree
iboza riparia or Tetradenia riparia

days to maturity:
plant spacing: 1 plant every 10 feet
sunlight requirements: 6-14 hours
look out for:
harvest notes: harvest leaves as you need
perennial

After years of not having a source plant to propagate this super cool bush from we finally have it back in stock. Iboza was one of Tiffanys favorite plants when she and Muriel both started farming together. Muriel had one in her garden and called it "patchouli" and it took forever to find out its real name and origin. Like many plants it has plenty of common names... ginger bush, nutmeg bush, incense bush, musk bush, gemmerbos and watersalie are just a few of the common names for this very strongly scented perennial shrub. The name iboza was derived from the Zulu word referring to the aromatic leaves - as the Zulu people have many uses for the plant including the relief of chest complaints, stomach ache and malaria. Inhaling the scent of the crushed leaves apparently also relieves headaches. If you are into musky scents like patchouli, frankincense and sage, you will love the super distinct smell of this aromatic shrub. According to the Marie Selby Botanical Garden in Sarasota, this rose variety was so commonly grown in Florida in the 19th century that it was given the nickname "Florida Cracker Rose", after the Florida Cracker. Your rose plant will be happy in well draining soil and full sun, since it doesn't love wet feed or intense humidity. The fungal issue that makes many roses futile to grow in Florida is called black spot, and while Louise Filippe roses are susceptible they apparently are less so than other varieties and will outgrow it quickly.

Prune regularly to promote new growth since flowers come from the new growth. All roses need slightly acidic soil, which you can achieve by adding a soil acidifier like “Organic Rose-tone” by Epsoma or any similar organic acid mix. Roses also prefer pine needle mulch since it has been shown to control black spot (a common fungal issue that attacks roses in humid areas) and when they decompose they naturally acidify the soil under them.

This rose is nice and fragrant and can be used for edible or medicinal purposes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0535/4461/products/69749289104__36379648-14B5-4328-8D17-BD0EA76419F4.fullsizerender.jpg?v=1675809869
chinese-lantern-3-gallon
Chinese Lantern, Abutilon

Chinese Lantern Abutilon
abutilon pictum

days to maturity:
plant spacing: 1 plant per 6 square feet
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: nothing!
harvest notes: not edible
perennial

Since this plant has so many names we are often combining them improperly and making up fake ones by accident. Sambac Jasmine is one of the most prized Jasmine varieties for its powerful fragrance and beautiful blossoms. Even though the blossoms are only about the size of a quarter you can smell them from like 6 feet away! Jasmine flowers make a delicious tea or an addition to your favorite tea or sparkling subtle drink. You can also preserve its scent to be used in homemade body products by making an “enfleurage” which is a super cool traditional method of infusing scent into hard fats like coconut oil or tallow by laying the fresh flower in a layer of the fat spread out on glass. Every day you change the flowers and the more times you do that the stronger the scent in the fat becomes. You can also do a similar process to scent green or black tea leaves. If you don’t have the time to get creative with your jasmine blossoms just enjoy them in the garden or throw one in your car on a hot day.

Jasmine bushes are easy to care for and require little.
