Roselle is a long growing season plant and thusly is not well suited to areas with short warm growing seasons. Flowers, like all hibiscus family flowers, are edible raw or as decorative accents. Calyxes can be harvested on the branch and used as a cut flower in floral arrangements. Local fruit farm LNB Groves uses Roselle in their famous rainbow smoothie alongside frozen jackfruit, Mamey & bananas. Try making Florida cranberry sauce, a tropical alternative to traditional cranberry sauce thats made with roselle, fresh ginger, pineapple, orange juice, sugar and spices. The seed pod inside the calyx, while not edible, contains lots of pectin so you can use them to make roselle (or any other type) jam. Our favorite vegetable farm, French Farms, adds the fresh petals of the calyx to the seasonal premade salads that he makes for the market during fall. In Thailand, the blue flowers are traditionally used to make purple rice, which you do by making your rice with a handful of the flowers and then adding a splash of citrus, usually lime to change the color to purple. This is a super fun way to add color to your diet and include kids in the kitchen. Raising the pH of the water (usually by adding lemon juice) makes the infusion go from blue to purple. You can also infuse these flowers in coconut milk to make sweet blue tinted deserts, or throw your daily harvest of flowers into a bottle of liquor to turn it blue.

Although the seed pod is not edible, we love growing Clitoria in gardens and at the farm, allowing it to climb up any unused fence space and produce beautiful edible & medicinal bright blue flowers. Butterfly pea vine starts its growth slowly but then ramps up during the hottest months of the year, growing quickly and flowering profusely. We harvest the flowers daily for sale to chefs and to dry for teas and we are amazed when we come back to one mature plant day after day and find it full of flowers; the amount of flowers one plant can produce is astounding. Leave a few flowers on your plant to get pollinated and make brown seed pods and you’ll have plenty of pea vine seeds for next season. If you don’t get around to harvesting all of your seed pods they will burst open at maturity and self seed easily. Pollinators like bees and butterflies love to visit this plant, and sometimes when we are harvesting flowers we have to shake bees out of every one!

In Southeast Asian countries communities have been brewing and drinking butterfly pea vine tea for centuries, and it's just now becoming more popular in America. Legend has it that these were found "growing wild" throughout the everglades, and after their discovery the seeds were saved and distributed by local gardeners who were looking for a tomato that could stand the extreme heat and humidity of a South Florida summer. Nowadays they're a staple in summer and winter gardens throughout the area. Their tiny size makes them adorable for use in salads, as garnish, and as snacks, and their sweet tase make them irresistible. These wild cherry tomatoes make large highly branched plants that are best grown in a wild and non-trellised fashion. If allowed to grow like a groundcover, left to sprawl and crawl along the ground they can make enormous plants with hundreds of fruit clusters on one plant!

Allow a few clusters of Everglades cherry tomatoes to stay on the plant and they will happily reseed themselves year after year. If you'd like to save the seeds instead just choose a few very ripe fruits, squeeze the insides out into a jar with water, allow it to ferment for a few days (this simulated the digestive system of an animal and will break down the mucilaginous coating around the seed) and then dry on a towel.

Despite its tolerance of the tropical heat Everglades cherry tomatoes can be grown anywhere where all other tomato varieties are. A tip for harvesting the tiny sweet fruits: instead of picking fruit by fruit, cut the entire cluster off the vine when all the fruit is most of the way ripe. Alternatively, break the fruit off of the vine one by one with their little green hat on (the technical term is "peduncle") since the fruits skin tends to rip when its removed hastily.

Planting and growing tips: plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in premoistened potting mix in a small pot or seedling tray. Keep cells moist in partial shade until germination, when they can be moved to full sun exposure. Seeds take 5-10 days to germinate. Our tomato seeds have just about 100% germination and aren't finnicky so if none of them sprout you may have a technical issue at hand. Make sure your pot or seedling trays arent too wet or you will rot the soft sided seeds before they have a chance to germinate. Everglades cherry tomatoes do best in full sun not just for the energy it needs for photosynthesis but also to help combat fungal issues caused by humidity and damp shady environments. Everglades tomatoes also get very large and have sprawling growth habits so we recommend using them like a groundcover (think pumpkin or sweet potato growth pattern) instead of trying to manage and trellis them.

All seeds were harvested from our urban farm and plant nursery in 2022. Seed packages are hand silkscreened by Gold Teeth Brooklyn, a handmade stationery company based in Los Angeles.

Seeds have been tested for reliable germination in our nursery at 80 degree daytime temperatures. The main key to planting radishes in your garden is to start them from seed, properly thin them once germinated, and give them enough sun to keep them growing fast until harvest. Radishes can be eaten at any part of its life, from a 10 day old sprout (thats micro greens!) to a mature radish date (its not recommended to leave them in the ground past their maturity day because they will get woody). While thinning them is critical you can take advantage of the space by leaving too many radishes in, then harvesting half of them young, making room for the remaining plants to mature properly. Radish flavor is greatly effected by temperature and the amount of time it took to grow them. Radishes grown in the hottest time of the year or grown too slowly end up very spicy, whereas radishes grown in cooler weather and at the appropriate speed of growth end up the most palatable. We always recommend that home gardeners make note of the date that they planted radish seeds and their “days to maturity” and keep good track of their progress. If they don’t look like radishes by the maturity date don’t keep waiting, harvest what you’ve grown, eat it (remember, all parts of the radish plant are edible at all growth stages) figure out what you did wrong (improper thinning, not enough sunlight, etc.) and try again.

Direct seed radishes right into your garden and thin to about 1 inch apart 10 days after germination.

Scarlet Nantes Orange Carrot
Daucus carota subspecies sativus

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
1500-1900 seeds per packet

days to maturity: 70 days
plant spacing: 16 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 10-14 hours
look out for: thinning is critical, and full sun
harvest notes: harvest at any age and size up to maturity date
annual

Scarlet Nantes are our favorite traditional orange carrot type for growing in South Florida. its got a good crunchy texture, mild flavor (remember, carrots are always sweeter when grown in cooler months), and a very small core. Carrots don’t love raised beds for a number of reasons, the two main ones being the typical quality and fertility of the soil, and the other being the amount of light available. While you may think your bed gets “full sun” thats almost impossible in a backyard, and no crop shows that more than the carrot. Carrots need to be grown quickly in order to taste good and stay tender, so if they have to be left in the ground for longer than the “days to maturity” length then your carrots are going to be an unpleasant dining experience. Also, many people don’t thin them at the critical time in their lifecycle (around 10-14 days after germination) which will hinder their proper growth. Commercial growers like it for its uniformity, color and excellent resistance to bolting and disease, which is critical for a lettuce variety in our climate. The market-quality, large, loose heads are green at the base and in the center and dark red at the ruffled leaf edges where the light hits it most. This variety has strong heat tolerance. It is suitable both for cool and warm conditions and retains its crisp fresh flavor through the growing season. Lettuce needs a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight in order to grow to maturity so if you don’t have that much in your garden we suggest only growing lettuce for baby leaf harvest. To do that direct seed lettuce in a thin line down your garden bed (instead of trying to fill a square foot with perfectly spaced out seeds) and cover lightly with soil. when the leaves are finger length harvest them all with scissors. A few weeks later they will grow back and you can “cut and come again” your baby leaf lettuce patch.

Thai Oakleaf Lettuce
Lactuca sativa

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
400-600 seeds per packet

days to maturity: 40 days
plant spacing: 2-3 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: not enough light causes bolting in head lettuce
harvest notes: harvest outer leaves as needed or whole head when mature
annual

This variety was selected by Southern Exposure Seed Exchange to produce excellent quality lettuce under high heat conditions. Cilantro plants are only 6-8 inches tall when they’re mature enough to harvest, which we think is one of the reasons why people think they aren’t succeeding at growing cilantro when really what they aren’t succeeding at is harvesting it! Cilantro is a plant that can be grown in “bunches” which means instead of planting 1 cilantro seed that makes 1 cilantro plant you plant about a dozen cilantro seeds together and basically treat them like they are one plant.

You can either go through and harvest exactly the mature fronds that you need for the kitchen one by one, or you can grab the whole “bunch” of fronds and cut a few inches above the base. this is called “cut and come again” and 2-3 weeks later the plant will regrow and can be harvested again. For a continual source of cilantro throughout the season we recommend having at least 4 plants and replanting them every 6 weeks or so through spring. It’s flavor is never better than when you pick it fresh from your garden. Another good reason to grow this graceful plant: The umbel of delicate yellow-green flowers attracts beneficial insects, from pest-eating wasps to colorful butterflies and once they’re pollinated theyll produce you dill seed, either for use in the kitchen or for planting next season. Dill in home gardens rarely has pest or disease problems, but black swallowtail butterfly larvae depend on dill as a food source. If they show up in your garden, you can concentrate the caterpillars on a few plants, and reap a double bounty - dill and butterflies! Italian basil is notorious for getting “downey mildew” in all climates, but mildews are harder to control and manage in humid areas like Miami. We grow a new downey mildew resistant variety developed by Rutgers University but even that isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be able to avoid getting mildew on your plants because of how intensely humid it is here. To increase your changes of success make sure your plant is in well draining soil and gets LOTS OF SUN and airflow. Don’t water your whole plant from above but rather water just the soil and allow it to dry out between waterings.

Blue Borage (borago officinalis) Approx 50 seeds
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange

Days to maturity: 60 days
Plant spacing: 1 plant per square foot
Sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
Look out for: plants flowering too quickly
Harvest notes: harvest flowers every morning for continual production
Lifecycle: annual

Thought to originate in Syria, borage is now naturalized throughout most of Europe and the United States. Echinacea is slow growing and requires a simulated frost for the seeds to germinate, which we do in our freezer before planting them. Once your echinacea plant gets going it will get about 36” wide and 4 feet tall and will produce many coneflowers. Echinacea likes full sun, not too much water, and low nutrients. Echinacea is used medicinally to prevent bacterial and viral infections, boost immunity, reduce inflammation, heal psoriasis and eczema, and heal respiratory conditions like bronchitis. To consume echinacea, you can use the petal, leaves, roots, or all of the above. The flowers or leaves should be harvested right after the flowers begin to bloom. Cut each stem right where the first set of leaves is growing. Rinse the flowers and then hang them to dry or lay them flat on a screen. To consume echinacea, either make an infusion from the leaves and petals or a decoction out of the dried roots. For petals and leaves, use one to two teaspoons of the dry material per one cup of water. To harvest the roots wait until the plant is as mature as its going to get (they wont survive the summer, so late spring or early summer is the best time to harvest roots) and then pull the plant up. Wash the roots thoroughly and cut them into the smallest pieces you can manage before using in an alcohol based tincture. Growing echinacea is easy but prepare yourself to wait pretty much until the middle of spring to see any flowers, since they don’t flower until then due to day length and maturity of plant. Plant your seedlings in fall and be patient, as the flowers are gorgeous, prolific and totally worth it.

Suyo Long Cucumber
Cucumis Sativus

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
Approx 60-80 seeds

days to maturity: 60 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot, trellised
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours
look out for: powdery mildew & worms
harvest notes: harvest daily for tender fruit under 12” long
annual

Suyo Long is an Asian burpless cucumber that can grow to 15” long with a sweet flavor and crisp texture. They are the easiest onion family plants we can grow in South Florida and luckily we can grow them most of the year without complications. You can squeeze about 6 clumps of scallions into one square foot in your garden, and you can either choose to harvest them from the roots and use the whole thing, or cut them just above the soil and let them regrow a few times during the season. The difference there is that if you cut and come again you wont get the tender white blanched bases which are more prized by chefs. If you want to take your scallion growing game to the next level, consider “mounding” soil up around the base of the plants 2 times before harvesting, to make the blanched section of the scallion longer and longer. Soil that is rich with compost holds water longer, which the scallions like, therefore amend the planting area with fresh compost before planting your scallions. Aesthetically, we love having a scallion patch in a kitchen garden because they add a very different texture, shape and growth pattern to the garden with their upright pointy shiny smooth stalks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0535/4461/products/image_38c921f0-facd-4e9e-9a19-3f99cc1eb6c5.jpg?v=1672767064
