Tomatoes are one of the most popular crops for home gardeners but they can also be quite challenging to grow, especially in our climate. It was one of the first of the “black” color group of tomatoes. It is also unusual in being extremely popular for the sake of its flavor, instead of only its unusual color. Cherokee Purple tomatoes are beefsteak in style, with green “shoulders” across the top. They are also notable for having a dense, juicy texture, with small seed locules irregularly scattered throughout the flesh. The comparatively dark interior color is enhanced by the tendency of the seeds to be surrounded by green gel. This cultivar originated with Craig LeHoullier, who claimed it was a century-old cultivar originating with the Cherokee people. Make sure you balance out your varieties with some small and some large fruit for the best yield.

Tidy Treats Cherry Tomato
Solanum Lycopersicum

days to maturity: 60 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours hours
look out for: all the pests love tomatoes, they require a good amount of management
harvest notes: harvest fruit after allowing it to vine ripen
annual

This is our number one most favorite cherry tomato for home gardens, recently surpassing the classic Sungold, which is now our humble number two! Because traditional heirloom indeterminate (vining) tomatoes can become real monsters (especially if they aren’t properly and regularly pruned) they aren’t great for growing in small spaces or in containers, so breeders have been doing a lot of work to find more suitable smaller company tomato plants. Tidy Treats is technically an indeterminate but its a compact one so it grows like a determinate but it produces its fruit slowly and continually (like an indeterminate does) which we prefer over making all of the fruit all at once and then being done. According to the breeders this plant can be trellised using a traditional tomato cage, which is pretty special because if you’ve ever tried to use one of those dinky wire cages to trellis an heirloom indeterminate you know they basically swallow it hole and spit it out mangled! It is an elongated plum tomato with bright red skin and golden streaks. This is the only variety I’ve ever seen that seems to sparkle and shimmer in the sun like a jewel… maybe thats one reason why we like it so much. Meaty red flesh has very little juice and cooks quickly into sauce, but it’s also delicious eaten fresh. Paste tomatoes have an old standing reputation to be not good for fresh eating, but really thats wrong… they are just better than the more watery tomatoes for making sauce. The thicker flesh is more meaty when you bit into them. We have a customer in Miami Shores who comes to our sale every fall JUST to grab this tomato variety, because he cant find it anywhere else and it does amazingly for him in his container garden.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0535/4461/products/Black_Sea_Man_Tomato__18379__22288.1405340543.1280.1280.jpg?v=1598736966
kewalo-slicer-tomato
Kewalo Slicer Tomato

Kewalo Tomato
solanum Lycopersicum

days to maturity: 75 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot, trellised
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours hours
look out for: all the pests love tomatoes, they require a good amount of management
harvest notes: harvest fruit after allowing it to vine ripen
annual
determinate

Kewalo is a uniform determinate variety bred at University of Hawaii by tomato breeder Dr. Jim Gilbert. Kewalo was named after one of his favorite fishing spots. Kewalo was bred to be resistant to bacterial wilt, mosaic virus and nematodes. 6-8 oz., red, round fruit with excellent sweet flavor. A good choice for hot & humid climates. Nematode resistance is a big deal in Florida, if you want a reliable determinate red tomato this is a great option. Determinate plants are “bush” tomatoes, meaning they do not vine and need less trellising and care. Short stocky plants work great for small spaces and container gardens. We stock a few different “boring red tomatoes” that may all sound similar in their descriptions because they are all humidity resistant plants with red palm-sized fruit but its because they are all very reliable options for South Florida growing. Our climate is so unique we really don’t recommend filling your garden with varieties that aren’t tried and true, so make sure you have at least one of these humid types in your shopping cart alongside some of the more fanciful heirlooms.

Taxi Tomato
solanum Lycopersicum
days to maturity: 75 days
plant spacing: 1 per square foot, trellised
sunlight requirements: 8-14 hours hours
look out for: all the pests love tomatoes, they require a good amount of management
harvest notes: harvest fruit after allowing it to vine ripen
annual
determinate

The best tomato variety for an early, lemon-yellow tomato. A wonderful choice to add a zesty spark to tomato salads or a splash of bright yellow color to your favorite salsas. Tomatoes are good for slicing making them perfect for sandwiches. Heat-tolerant Black Krim has a dark brown-red color that gets even darker in hotter weather. Always a favorite in taste tests, Black Krim has a flavor that is described as tangy, rich, and sweet. It makes beautiful dark slices. It is prone to cracking, so be sure to water regularly, especially when there is not enough rain, to avoid cycles of wet-to-dry-to- wet-to-dry soil that causes the fruit to crack. Vigorous plants grow best with strong staking or tall cages, plus you’ll have to support the fruit once the vines get loaded so they don’t break off before they ripen.

As of mid February we have stopped selling our assorted selection of tomato varieties because it is too late in the season to plant them, however we do sell everglades cherry tomato seedlings through June.

Everglades Cherry Tomato
Solanum Lucopersicum

days to maturity: 57 days
plant spacing: 2 square feet per plant
sunlight requirement: 8 - 14 hours
look out for: Hornworms - if you you see branches without any leaves or half eaten fruits look carefully for green caterpillars.
harvest notes: Pick tomatoes when they are as ripe as possible. Recommended highly for the Mid-Atlantic, and hot, humid disease-prone areas, especially where blight is a problem. Tropic is categorized as a VFN type, which refers to its disease resistance package. That means it's resistant to Verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt and nematodes. Not familiar with our most problematic soil borne pest, the nematode? well, its a real issue in South Florida especially for full season crops like tomatoes, so a nematode resistant variety is a true gift of tomato breeding.

Image courtesy of The Seed Collection

Yellow Everglades Cherry Tomato (Solanum Pimpinellifolium) Live Plant

Days to maturity: 57 days
Plant spacing: 2 square feet per plant
Sunlight requirement: 8 - 14 hours
Look out for: Hornworms - If you you see branches without any leaves or half eaten fruits Look carefully for green caterpillars.
Harvest notes: Pick tomatoes when they are as ripe as possible. Alternatively, break the fruit off of the vine one by one with their little green hat on (the technical term is "peduncle") since the fruits skin tends to rip when its removed hastily.

Midnight Roma Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) Live Plant

Days to maturity: 80 days
Plant spacing: 2 square feet per plant
Sunlight requirement: 8 - 14 hours
Look out for: Hornworms - if you you see branches without any leaves or half eaten fruits look carefully for green caterpillars.
Harvest notes: Pick tomatoes when they are as ripe as possible. They have been breeding new resilient varieties with the focus being flavor, and some of their new crops like a garlic flavored leek and a deeply flavored butternut squash can be bought at the grocery store already. Most other varieties you’ll need to grow yourself or get from a local small farm. Last year “midnight Roma” was our wild card variety; which means we had never tried growing it before! All other varieties we sell at our sales we have some experience with. We grew a small patch at our farm and while its yield wasn't super impressive the beautiful fruit was exceptionally flavored. Purple food doesn't love intense heat so we weren't surprised that it wasn't a big producer but we still liked growing it and will do so again this year. This beautifully colored paste tomato is high in phytonutrients and anti-oxidants because of its purple tinge. Paste tomatoes are known for having less watery flesh and more deep umami flavor than salad tomatoes.

INDETERMINATE plants have a vining growth pattern, requiring regular pruning and trellising. They don’t stop growing until something removes them, so with proper care they can reach 15-20 feet long. They produce new fruit on their new growth constantly and are great fun to grow but require significant space and attention.
