Every season we learn about a new edible plant species and we think “thats edible and we didn't know the whole time?!” and 4 years ago it was begonias. According to the internet all begonia varieties are edible, and there are a TON of varieties especially available here in South Florida. Another reason to get excited about growing begonias in your garden? THEY LIKE THE SHADE! yes, you heard me right... a flowering plant that likes the shade is a rarity indeed. Be forewarned, they don't like deep shade, so a garden that gets early morning or late day sunlight is ideal. We've purchased a variety of begonias from a local grower for you to choose from. Starting begonia from seed can be quite challenging so if you do want to propagate these you need to do it from stem cuttings. Begonias are one of our favorite flowers to use for our famous edible flower cookies! The flowers lay nice and flat and don't shrink while keeping their bright coloring and delicious tart flavor.
These plants were not grown organically by us, we purchased them from a conventional nursery.

Plant Care
Plant Care
When your plant delivery arrives, make sure you water your new plants thoroughly with a light spray of water (none of this thumb over the hose stuff). We recommend planting them within 10 days of receiving them. If you do intent to wait to plant them, we recommend placing them in a shallow reservoir (like a baking pan) and filling it with half an inch of water so they can drink the water from below while you are at work and place them in an area with plenty of sun. When planting in your garden always add a dash of Organic granular fertilizer, and give them extra water during their first week in their new home, while they adjust. We recommend disturbing the root ball as little as possible during planting.
