Tainung 65 is a pink skinned white fleshed "Japanese style" sweet potato that we got cuttings for from our friend and master gardener Chip, in Boca Raton. Its similar in flavor and quality to "Murasaki", which we have been growing and selling for years, but apparently its a more vigorous grower and higher yielding. The foliage is wide and tinged with purple making it quite ornamental.
Sweet potatoes are great summer crops for your raised bed or your food forest just make sure your raised bed doesn't have much else in it since these plants really spread out! Sweet potatoes will thrive relatively pest free (check the underside of the leaves often for whitefly) and don't mind the heat, humidity and rainfall of summer. They are a very diverse food crop as the leaves can be eaten cooked and then you get a root crop! Fun fact: the more you prune your sweet potato plant above ground (by harvesting and eating the leaves) the more energy your plant will put into making you roots, so by harvesting (and eating) your greens you are also helping increase your root harvest yield.

Plant Care
Plant Care
When your plant delivery arrives, make sure you water your new plants thoroughly with a light spray of water (none of this thumb over the hose stuff). We recommend planting them within 10 days of receiving them. If you do intent to wait to plant them, we recommend placing them in a shallow reservoir (like a baking pan) and filling it with half an inch of water so they can drink the water from below while you are at work and place them in an area with plenty of sun. When planting in your garden always add a dash of Organic granular fertilizer, and give them extra water during their first week in their new home, while they adjust. We recommend disturbing the root ball as little as possible during planting.
