Tithonia rotundifolia, commonly called Mexican sunflower, is a tall, heat-loving annual that thrives in our zone 10b climate. Reaching 4 – 6 feet, it produces brilliant orange, daisy-like f lowers that stand out against coarse, dark green foliage. The blooms are rich in nectar, making them favorites of butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. This plant thrives in full sun and well- drained soil, even when conditions are hot, dry, or less fertile
than ideal. In fact, it often performs best in lean soils where it isn’t over fed. Once established, Tithonia is quite drought-tolerant, though occasional watering during dry spells will keep it looking lush. In our subtropical gardens, it can bloom reliably from summer through fall, adding a strong vertical presence to borders, pollinator plantings, or the back of vegetable
beds. Tithonia rotundifolia is also excellent for cutting gardens—the long stems and vivid blooms hold up well in arrangements.

Plant Care
Plant Care
When your plant delivery arrives, make sure you water your new plants thoroughly with a light spray of water (none of this thumb over the hose stuff). We recommend planting them within 10 days of receiving them. If you do intent to wait to plant them, we recommend placing them in a shallow reservoir (like a baking pan) and filling it with half an inch of water so they can drink the water from below while you are at work and place them in an area with plenty of sun. When planting in your garden always add a dash of Organic granular fertilizer, and give them extra water during their first week in their new home, while they adjust. We recommend disturbing the root ball as little as possible during planting.
